How to Glue MDF and Acrylic: Best Adhesives for Laser Cut Projects
The right glue depends entirely on the material. Here’s what actually works — and what to avoid.
Wood Glue
Acrylic Cement
CA (Super Glue)
Using the wrong adhesive is one of the most common reasons a laser cut assembly falls apart. MDF and acrylic behave very differently, so they each need a different approach.
4 Steps to a Strong Bond
1
Test Fit First
Dry-fit every piece before adding any glue to catch alignment issues early.
2
Clean the Edges
Wipe off soot or dust from the laser-cut edge — it weakens adhesion.
3
Apply Sparingly
A thin, even layer bonds better than a thick, messy one for both materials.
4
Clamp & Cure
Hold pieces in place with clamps or tape while the adhesive fully sets.
Which Glue for Which Material
MDF & Plywood
Best choice: wood glue (PVA)
- Strong, flexible bond on porous wood
- Dries clear and sands easily
- CA glue works for quick tacking, but is more brittle
Acrylic
Best choice: acrylic cement (solvent)
- Chemically welds the pieces together
- Gives a near-invisible seam
- Avoid regular super glue — it can cloud clear acrylic
Don’t mix them up: Acrylic solvent cement will not bond wood, and wood glue won’t properly weld acrylic. If a project combines both materials, use each adhesive only on its matching surface, or switch to a flexible multi-purpose epoxy for the joint where they meet.
